Does age make a difference in regards to wisdom? Another age old question we may consider before delegating additional responsibility to an employee or a political candidate. In ancient times, before modern miracle medicines, it was considered to be a testament of a person’s wisdom to achieve old age living a long righteous life. In our modern world, it is a rare person that lives to achieve a long life when he or she may abuse their bodies consuming excesses of food, tobacco, alcohol or drugs and avoids exercise. In a novel I surmised what King Solomon may have answered the Queen of Sheba when she asked his opinion about choosing a young or older person to help him govern. The novel is a contemporary application of a story form to promote understanding of proverbs and ancient wise sayings in relation to our modern times.
“Do you prefer to choose older men over younger men to be your governors?” Bilqis asked.
“It would depend upon the man’s character and abilities rather than his age. A man with a grey beard displays a crown of glory that surrounds his face. If he has achieved a long life by living an upright and righteous life, his gray beard is his testament.” Old age is a crown of glory, it is found in the way of righteousness. (Proverb 16:31)
“A young man will have more strength than the old man. However, a young governor must possess humility and good sense to know when to consult the advice of their elder’s long experience, knowledge, and wisdom. He should consider men of gray hairs as if they are a locust tree in the glory of bloom. Their life has been full and gray hair displays authority and influence and is a testament of the glory of achieving a long life.” The boast of young men is their strength and the glory of old men is their gray hairs. (Proverb 20:29)
