What did King Solomon, Epicurus, and President Roosevelt have in common with the human emotion of fear?
Current news reports are focused on information about fears and anxiety of gun violence in the USA. Other news issues creating fear relate to immigration, economy, abortion, healthcare, infrastructure and a host of other political-social issues to change the concepts of a democratic republic envisioned by its founders into a socialist society.
Fear is an animal and human emotion for various purposes that have been recorded in history since the beginning of time.
Those who obtain understanding and knowledge of the different aspects of fear and the positive and negative effects, will recognize how to make wise long-term choices and decisions in their lifetimes.
All three of above men in history recognized the effects of the emotion of fear and made personal philosophic claims during their lives that pertain to religious, atheistic, and political purposes of fear.
The Purpose of This Post
To provide information to those interested in understanding the wisdom of fear to hopefully prevent foolish short-term decisions being made that result in foolish long-term effects.
Also, to explain why people who have never been taught to believe in God to help them overcome fear and anxiety in their lives may differ from those who have a religious faith.
King Solomon 1000 BC
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death. (Proverb 14:12)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (King Solomon Proverb 9:10 1000 BC)
Epicurus (341—271 B.C.E.)
“For Epicurus, the gods function mainly as ethical ideals, whose lives we can strive to emulate, but whose wrath we need not fear.”
President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933 AD)
“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”
In My Opinion
In our present Republic form of Government and the present interpretation of the First Amendment in regards to separation of State from Religion, some questions need to be considered about the effects of laws of God and man,
For example, while a religious faith believer may have have fears of danger, yet not fear of death because of their belief in an afterlife. Will a person of religious faith be more apt to be a more courage in life and be more apt to become a good law-abiding citizen than a non faith believer in God?
In my opinion, there are various cunning forces seeking power make use of fear to bring about short term foolish decisions that result in long term disastrous decisions to our Nation, and the World.
We all need to better understand the wisdom of fear in our lives if we are concerned with the present and future for ourselves and our loved ones.
