Interested in ancient proverbial wisdom to prepare you as a host for the upcoming family gathering?
The Chicago Tribune columnist sardonic humor article titled, Mr. Thanksgiving Advice Man, gave the following advice.
“Open the bar before noon, and make sure to get video of the family fight.”
The Purpose of This Post
Is to convey an ancient wisdom proverb to hopefully give some personal advice for anyone who is apprehensive of hosting Thanksgiving Day when certain family members are known to have social and/or drinking problems.
King Solomon
All the days of the oppressed are wretched,
but the cheerful heart has a continual feast. (Proverb 15:15)
What’s My Point?
“Solomon was not saying that the person with a cheerful heart always has a huge table full of awesome food and drink in front of them. His observation instead is that for the cheerful heart, life always has joy.”
“When Solomon wrote the words of our text, he was not giving a command, but telling us what he has seen. “
So, should certain family members not be invited on Thanksgiving because they are prone to test the cheerfulness and joy of this traditional family gathering?
Will the host feel guilty about excluding a family member who may be in lack of a physical or spiritual time in life and/or carrying around a feeling of being oppressed or a wretched?
In My Opinion
My personal advice is to make sure a prayer is said before dinner to remind everyone of the real purpose of Thanksgiving. That is to thank God for blessing us with family and providing the table.
And, do what our family did, purposely run out of booze even though everyone knew why, yet never complained.
Perhaps no one complained because we are family even though some family members are either rich or rich or poor, Democrat or Republican. etc. etc. a family that prays together stays together.
And, a spiritual family understands the Proverb 17:21
“Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife”
