What wisdom advice did King Solomon have about mocking others?
The Chicago Tribune has two articles which I believe can be related to blackface and the N-word. One relates to how the media portrayed white students mocking American Indians, the other about listening to song vs. with the N-word.
The Purpose of This Post
To relate both of these articles to the ancient root cause of people mocking other people.
King Solomon
Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. (Proverb 17:5)
The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all. (Proverb 22:2)
What’s My Point?
Mocking people was a problem 3000 years ago as evidenced by the above proverbs. The practice carried on from the sinful pride of rich mocking the poor over time to other hateful actions.
For example, Halloween originated as a pagan festival to mock the day before the Christians celebrate All Saints Day.
However, if a black person sings a song verse with the N-word, it may not be as offensive than if a white person uses the N-word.
My point is mocking is a sin, and if the concept of sin is ignored by anyone regardless of wealth, birth, or color, or culture, a punishment is deserving. Whether the punishment is in the present or future after death makes no difference
In other words, the Bible advice is simple, it is a sin of pride to mock anyone because it is an offense to God, the maker of every living person.
In My Opinion,
Over time, and especially in our contemporary world and times, teaching Bible wisdom to avoid sin of pride and mocking others is disappearing from culture.
The result is more and more divisiveness and division as evidenced in USA politics, cities, States and neighborhoods separating themselves from each other.
As for the reason why, people are not offended listening to a song using the N-word, but will raise holy hell if someone of a different race uses the word or mocks the color of their skin or wealth, it is a sign of a breakdown taking place in our Nation by people dividing themselves into groups instead of unifying into the Nations of God.
In other words, one sin leads to another.
