King Solomon, Why Good or Bad Things Happen

Ever wonder why bad things happen to good people? Or good things happens to bad people?Or why things don’t happen as planned?

King Solomon wrote this observation in Ecclesiastes 9 that partially addresses these questions.

¹¹ I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.

¹² Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times
that fall unexpectedly upon them. 

Notice he did not give an answer to the question. Instead he only remarked what he also observed could happen in life on earth, or what he describes as the place we all are born “under the sun.” So why are there time and chance factors in life. King Solomon never could explain because at the time he wrote his Ecclesiastes, he had come to the conclusion that no person will ever be capable or wise enough to know all the answers of life.

However King Solomon continues on in his Ecclesiastes to explain another observation. Why wisdom is still better than folly in life.

In a previous post, I surmised how he may have answered this same question twenty years earlier in his life to the Queen of Sheba.  At that time in his life he was world renowned for his wisdom and thought he was capable of understanding and discovering all the mysteries of life “under the sun.” His answer to the Queen did not include “time and chance.” However, it did give an accurate explanation three thousand years ago that still relates today of about other factors of why evil things can happen to either good or bad people.
