King Solomon, Modern “Shamir Worm”

 Why we need to locate the lost Shamir worm?

I read an interesting post on how to improve conversation skills. However, in my opinion, the article did not address the greatest modern day obstacle that is impeding our youths from obtaining this skill. The only thing I could add to my comment would be to suggest that we need to find the lost ancient Shamir that is destroying our modern youth’s ability to converse.

What is the Legend of the Shamir?

“Solomon’s artisans reputedly used the Shamir in the construction of Solomon’s Temple. The material to be worked, whether stone, wood or metal, was affected by being “shown to the Shamir.” Following this line of logic (anything that can be ‘shown’ something must have eyes to see), early Rabbinical scholars described the Shamir almost as a living being. Other early sources, however, describe it as a green stone. It is a living stone according to legends that King Solomon used to aid in the building of his Temple. Some claim it was a living worm that carved out the stones.”

According to the legend, the Shamir was lost over time.

What is My Point?

In our modern times, if you go into any restaurant and observe the patrons, I guarantee that you will see a significant number of patrons staring at their electronic devices (phones, computers, pads, etc.,) instead of conversing.  Sharing meals is a prime time for friends and family to converse with each other. Youths today, in my opinion are losing out this experience to listen, learn, participate and enjoy the art of conversation.

How Does a Shamir Relate?

I related the legend Shamir form to be in the form of a “worm.” Today we describe when a computer is “wormed,” the device has become impaired of its normal operative control. Think about that. The electronic devices in my opinion, need to be “wormed” to disengage at the dinner table to allow quality time of use by ourselves and our children to restore the art of conversation.

In other words, we need to “Shamir” or “worm” our electronic devices so we use our short lifespan as wisely as King Solomon advised.

and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2     a time to be born and a time to die,……..etc. etc……..

(I surmise King Solomon would have included this phrase too, if electronic devices were in existence 3000 years ago)

“I wish someone would design a “Reminder App” to convey your thoughts on conversation by sounding an alarm. For example, give a parent an override to sound an alarm on a teenager’s phone whenever a teenager sits down at a dinner table with their family and takes out his or her phone.”
